Become a Time Traveler

A few years ago, my teenage son and I were discussing the merits of a suggestion I had made. At one point, instead of continuing the argument, I told him: "Think of me as your time machine".

Recently, this came up again. I was at a work event and (not surprisingly) there were lot of young faces in the crowd. One of the questions asked was "What advice do you have for people who were just starting in their careers". While there are many things that came to mind such as "work hard/play hard", "prioritize your time well", "think for yourself" etc, I realized there is one fundamental thing that has helped me the most. Treating others like my time machine!

There is a reason why AI is taking over the world and threatening all our jobs. Granted Artificial Intelligence has ability to deal with lot more information in the same amount of time than humans do. Google Brain can go through lot more pictures of cats on the internet than a human brai…

The Silent Manager

"Sometimes I feel like a fraud", he said.

My friend and I were talking about our jobs when he made this revelation. I assumed he, like many others I know, was about to talk about Imposter Syndrome. But I was wrong. He felt he was a fraud because he would go to a lot of meetings where he had nothing to add. His team would get together, he would join, sit there, watch the action, and the meeting would get over. Time for the next meeting. And he felt was he was being overpaid to do this.

Was he getting overpaid? Or was he doing what he was expected to do, and it's the vocal, take charge, participatory managers that are wrong?

Managers get paid for opinions and for decisions. At the lowest level of management those decisions and opinions relate to execution and delivery. At the highest level of management they are about bets and investments. But thats what managers do. And thats what they get paid for.
